(1988) Los Angeles 4, Oakland 1
The World Series is the championship series of Major League Baseball. The World Series is played between the American League and National League champions and the Series winner is determined through a best-of-seven playoff. Los Angeles clinched the National League pennant by shutting out the Mets in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series. On the other hand, the final National League MVP, Most Valuable Player Kirk Gibson was suffering a strained hamstring and was questionable for the complete World Series. The Series opened at Dodger Stadium, and the home team got off to a good start when Mickey Hatcher who hit a two run homer off ace Dave Stewart in the first inning. Oakland struck in the second as Jose Canseco blasted a grand slam to center off, Tim Belcher who was removed after the inning. The Dodger bullpen was brilliant, and when Los Angeles came up in the ninth inning, they trailed by just 4-3. But if they were to return, they'd have to do it against baseball's top closer, Dennis Eckersley. In Game 2, the Dodgers strafed A's starter, Storm Davis for 5 runs in the 3rd inning, but it wouldn't have made any difference who pitched for Oakland, as Hershiser wasn't far from perfect. In nine innings, he allowed two walks and 3 singles and went 3 for 3 at the plate with a pair of doubles. Mike Marshall paced the Dodger hitting attack with a triple and a two run homer, and the Dodgers cruised with 6-0. Hershiser wasn't perfect in Game 5, but he was good enough, limiting the A's to 4 hits and 2 runs. Meanwhile, the Dodgers went ahead with 4-1 on two run homers from Mickey Hatcher in the first inning and Mike Davis in the fourth.
