A new sport, biathlon, a combination of cross -country skiing and shooting was added to the Olympic programme. The first race was won by Klas Lestander of Sweden. Women competed in speed skating for the first time. The United States ice hockey team won an unexpected championship, upsetting Canada and USSR, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. In that Squaw Valley 1960 year USSR achieved good position with hard working. They got 7, 5, 9 medals respectively Gold, Silver, Bronze in that specific year.
