Patty Schnyder
Tennis is an outdoor sport which can be played between two players or four players. Players utilize a stringed racquet to hit a rubber ball, hollow inside covered with felt over a net into the opponent's court. In some places tennis is referred to as lawn tennis. This game started in England and was the most popular amongst the upper class of society. Presently tennis is an Olympic sport, as well as, it is played in various tournaments including the four Grand Slams in many countries, by people of all ages and classes. There are three different court surfaces it is played on namely, clay court, grass court and hard court. Depending on the surface, each one provides a different movement of speed and bounce for the ball, which in turn affects the level of play of individual players. He was awarded world-ranked number15, defeated number one Austrian regional champion Patrik Mayr before a sold out crowd of 1,500 people during a Battle of the Sexes match held in Austria on Sunday, December 15. Mayr’s ATP, Association of Tennis Professionals ranking was number 1162. He was the biggest mover in Tour Rankings in 1995, moving up 634 spots. He was the recipient of 1998 Tour Most Improved Player Award. In juniors, he won 1994 International Championships and was 1993 and 1994 Swiss Champion. He competed in Continental Cup team competition in 1995. Tour mentor was Judith Wiesner in the Partners for Success Alumni program. In the year 1993 he played two ITF, International Tennis Federation Circuit events, reaching quarterfinal in pro debut at ITF and Bergdorf-SUI. In 1994 he reached two ITF Circuit quarterfinal and played first Tour qualifying. In 1995, he won three ITF Circuit singles titles and made his Tour debut at Zurich as WC, Wild Card ranked number 234, reaching 2 round defeating 24 ranked Spirle.
