He started playing tennis at age 10 and turned professional at 18 in 1982. Arrese is best remembered for winning the men's singles Silver Medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in his home-town. In the final, he was defeated in a marathon five-set match by Marc Rosset of Switzerland with figures like 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 and 8-6. During his career, Arrese won six top-level singles and four tour doubles titles, and reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 23. He won 4 double titles, 6 singles titles. In 1985 he was doubles runner-up at Bologna, 1984 quarterfinalist at Palermo, lost five-set match to Jimmy Arias in third round at 1987 French Open. He compiled a 23-20 match record while finishing number 44 on the ATP, Association of Tennis Players. He played Davis Cup for his native Spain in February 1989 and defeated Francisco Maciel in the fifth and deciding tie. In 1988, he was the winner at Cairo, Agadir Challengers and runner-up at Marrakech. He was the semi-finalist at Hamburg, Clermont quarterfinalist at Nice, Kitzbuhel, a Barcelona, and Geneva. In 1987 he was again a quarterfinalist at Palermo, semifinalist at Agadir, Clermont. He was a doubles semifinalist at Prague, doubles runner-up at Cairo, 1986 semifinalist at Nice, doubles winner at Agadir Challenger and doubles runner-up at Marrakech.
