Arthur Ashe (1943 to 1993)
Tennis is an outdoor sport which can be played between two players or four players. Players utilize a stringed racquet to hit a rubber ball, hollow inside covered with felt over a net into the opponent's court. In some places tennis is referred to as lawn tennis. This game started in England and was the most popular amongst the upper class of society. Presently tennis is an Olympic sport, as well as, it is played in various tournaments including the four Grand Slams in many countries, by people of all ages and classes. There are three different court surfaces it is played on namely, clay court, grass court and hard court. Depending on the surface, each one provides a different movement of speed and bounce for the ball, which in turn affects the level of play of individual players. Arthur Ashe was born on 10th July 1943 in Richmond, Virginia and died on 6th February 1993. He was a prominent African American tennis player who was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. During his playing career, he won three Grand Slam titles. Ashe is also remembered for his efforts to further social causes. He is a right handed player His height was six foot and one inch and weight was 160 pounds. In 1968, he won United States National championship and US open championship. He won Australian Open, Berkeley and Paris Indoor in the year 1970. In 1973, he won Chicago WCT, World Championship Tennis and in 1972, he won Louisville WCT, Montreal WCT, Rome WCT and Rotterdam WCT. In 1974 he won Barcelona WCT, Bologna WCT and Stockholm and in 1974 he won Barcelona WCT, Dallas WCT, Los Angeles, Munich WCT, Rotterdam WCT, San Francisco, Stockholm WCT and Wimbledon. In 1976, he won Columbus WCT, Indianapolis WCT, Richmond WCT, Rome WCT, and Rotterdam WCT.
He won US open in 1968 by defeating Tom Okker 14-12, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3. He also won Australian open in 1970 by defeating Dick Crealy 6-4, 9-7 and 6-2 and Wimbledon in 1975 by defeating Jimmy Connors 6-1, 6-1, 5-7 and 6-4. He was the runners up in Australian open in 1971 and US open in 1972.
