Sydney 2000
The Olympic Games, or Olympics, are an international multi-sport event taking place every four years which comprise of summer and winter games. Though the first ancient games were held in 776 B.C, the modern games started from 1896. The unity of the 5 continents is shown on the Olympic flag by five colorful intertwined rings of red, blue, green, yellow, and black, created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin to represent at least one color of the participating country’s national flag. Sydney 2000 was also one of that Olympic. It was a summer Olympic XXVIII game. Sydney 2000 Olympics included 199 Nations and 4 individual athletes, 10,651 athletes including 4,069 women and 6,582 men, 300 events and 46,967 volunteers. This Olympics was started on 15 September 2000 with Australia as the host country. It included 28 sports like as aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, canoe or kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, handball hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, softball, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling. Sydney 2000 Olympics’ official opening was done by Sir William Deane, Governor General of Australia and by lighting the Olympic flame by Cathy Freeman of athletics. The Olympic oath was taken by Rechelle Hawkes of hockey and the Official oath was taken by Peter Kerr of water polo. The Sydney 2000 Olympics Games were the largest yet, with 10,651 athletes competing in 300 events. Despite their size, they were well organised, renewing faith in the Olympic Movement. Birgit Fischer earned two gold medals in Kayak to become the first woman in any sport to win medals 20 years apart. Judoka Ryoko Tamura lost in the final in both Barcelona and Atlanta, but came back to win the gold medal in Sydney. Steven Redgrave became the first rower to win gold medals at five consecutive Olympics. The US softball team won in stirring fashion, losing three games in a row and then coming back to defeat each of the teams they had lost to. The closing ceremony was on 01 October 2000 with United States of America being in the leading position with 40 Gold, 24 Silver and 33 Bronze for the specific year. During this Olympic a huge amount of clean play and sheer determination amongst all the athletes were exhibited.
