Stockholm 1912
The Olympic Games are an international multi-sport event taking place every four years which comprises of summer and winter games. Though the first ancient games were held in 776 B.C, the modern games started from 1896.The unity of the 5 continents is shown on the Olympic flag by five colorful intertwined rings of red, blue, green, yellow, and black, created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin to represent at least one color of the participating country’s national flag. The 1912 Olympic events were held at the Stockholm suburb of Sweden and was a part of summer Olympics V. On the 5th of May, King Gustav V led the opening ceremony by lighting the Olympic flame. The Olympics comprised of 102 events in which almost 28 nations participated with a total of 2,407 athletes including 48 women and 2,359 men. The event comprised 14 sports that included aquatics, athletics, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, tennis, tug of war and wrestling. The Swedish hosts introduced the use of unofficial electronic timing devices for the track events, as well as the first use of a public address system. The 1912 Olympics also saw some highlights with the middleweight semifinal match between Russian Martin Klein and Finland’s Alfred Asikainen that lasted for eleven hours. Hannes Kohlemainen of Finland won three gold medals in long-distance running. The most popular hero of the 1912 games was Jim Thorpe of the United States. Thorpe won the five event pentathlon and shattered the world record in the ten event decathlon. The United States of America presented leading position with 25 gold, 19 silver and 19 bronze medals. The 1912 Olympics concluded with a grand closing ceremony on July 27, 1912. This event also marked the establishment of many new records.
