Montreal 1976
The Olympic Games, or Olympics, are an international multi-sport event taking place every four years which comprise of summer and winter games. Though the first ancient games were held in 776 B.C, the modern games started from 1896. The unity of the 5 continents is shown on the Olympic flag by five colorful intertwined rings of red, blue, green, yellow, and black, created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin to represent at least one color of the participating country’s national flag. Montreal 1976 was also one of that Olympic. It was a summer Olympic XXVIII game. The 1976 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXI Olympiad, were held in 1976 in Canada. Montreal 1976 Olympics games included 92 Nations, 6,084 athletes including 1,260 women and 4,824 men, and 198 events. Athens started on 17 July 1976 in Canada as the host city. The official opening of the games was done by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by lighting of the Olympic flame by Stephane Prefontaine and Sandra Henderson, the two athletes aged 16 and 15. The Olympic oath was taken by Pierre Saint-Jean of weightlifting and the official oath was taken by Maurice Forget of athletics. This Olympics games included 21 sports consist in aquatics archery, athletics, basketball, boxing, canoe or kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastic, handball, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling. Nadia Comaneci was the star of the Games. She was the first gymnast in Olympic history to be awarded the perfect score of 10.0. She achieved her first perfect 10 on the uneven parallel bars and the judges awarded her the maximum mark seven times. Lasse Viren extended the line of great Finnish distance runners by winning the 5,000m and 10,000m events for the second time in a row. He also competed in the marathon, attempting to emulate Emil Zatopek's 1952 distance treble, and in his first attempt at this distance, finished fifth. The closing ceremony was 01 August 1976 with USSR being in the leading position with 49, 41, 35 Gold, Silver and Bronze medals respectively. During this Olympic a huge amount of clean play and sheer determination amongst all the athletes were exhibited.
