The Toronto Maple Leafs began defense of their title against the Montreal Canadiens in the playoff semifinals, downing the Habs convincingly in five games. Although Detroit finished fourth in the regular season, Gordie Howe captured his sixth Art Ross trophy after returning to the top of the scoring ranks for the first time in six seasons led the Wings back from a two game deficit to 4 games to 2 upset of Chicago in the other semifinal.
 
Detroit had won six of the last seven playoff meetings between the two rivals, but in the 1963 finals, even Howe's heroics couldn't lift the Wings. Toronto's Dick Duff scored twice in the first 68 seconds of the opening game, setting an NHL record, and the Leafs cruised to 4-2 win. They prevailed by the same score again in the second game, as Ed Lintzenberger scored in the first six minutes. Leafs winger Eddie shack netted the Cup clinching goal in Game 5 with 6 minutes 32 seconds remaining. Keon sealed it with an empty-netter in the final minutes, becoming the first player to score two shorthanded goals in a Stanley Cup final game.
