Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Minnesota North Stars 1990-91
The Stanley Cup is one of the most-recognized symbols in North American sports. It is the championship trophy of the NHL, National Hockey League won by one of the teams that have qualified for the championship finals after playing a series of playoff matches. It is the only trophy in professional sports that has the name of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff engraved upon it. The Cup winners keep it until the new champion is crowned. In 1990 to 1991 for the Stanley Cup the match played between two teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins team versus the Minnesota North Stars team. NHL, the National Hockey League is a premier professional North American Sports League played in indoor stadiums. It is divided into two conferences, each comprising of three divisions of ice hockey teams. In the wacky final series of the 1991 playoffs, the first seeded team from the Pittsburgh team met the sixteenth seeded team from Minnesota. This would also mark the first time a team from the province of Alberta was not involved in the finals since 1982. For the Minnesota North Stars it would be their second Stanley Cup Final appearance and for Pittsburgh. The Pens cruised past Washington, the New York Rangers team and the Boston team on the road to the finals. The North Stars team was able to overcome Chicago, Saint Louis and Edmonton, all of which finished 20-or-more points higher in the standings. Mario Lemieux took control scoring twelve points while playing only five games of the six game championship series. The Pittsburgh team took the series lead 3-2 and iced the Minnesota team winning 8-0 in game six. The Penguins teams' thirty something brigade, who saved the day in the first round when he scored twice in the dramatic Game 7 victory over the New Jersey Devils. Both Hrdina and Mullen played for Calgary teams’ championship team in the year 1989. The Minnesota threatened to become the first team since the year 1948 to win the championship with a losing record. The first three goals of the Pittsburgh team all came on special teams. By contrast, the North Stars team scored only three power play goals in the finals after tying the NHL record with 32 man-advantage tallies in the first three rounds of the playoffs. Finally the Pittsburgh Penguins team defeated the Minnesota North Stars team and won the Stanley Cup.
