Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Sabres 1974-75

The Stanley Cup is one of the most-recognized symbols in North American sports. It is the championship trophy of the NHL, National Hockey League which is won by one of the teams that have qualified for the championship finals after playing a series of playoff matches. It is the only trophy in professional sports that has the name of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff engraved upon it. The Cup winners keep it until the new champion is crowned.

The Flyers teams’ first round adversary was Toronto, a team that had been in chaos most of the season. Their coach, Red Kelly, had been under pressure most of the way. Toronto was only in the playoffs as a receiver of sports greed, one of 12 qualifiers and the only one with a losing record. The Leafs had not beaten the Flyers during the season, getting one tie in four tries. It was the same story in the playoffs. The Flyers expelled the Leafs in four games, though the Leafs did develop the last one into overtime prior to yielding.

The Flyers came to know that they would be meeting the New York Rangers in the subsequent round, but they ended up playing the New York Islanders, the Cinderella team of the NHL. The Flyers, however, were confident and the Islanders had been the toughest physical test for the defending champions all season. Flyers won the second game in overtime then Parent came back and blanked the Islanders 1-0, in game three. In the fourth game, the Flyers were tired and tracked at one time with 3-0. The Sabres came out smoking against the Flyers and threw a barrage at Parent, who refused admittance to the net.

After staying for two periods, the Flyers blew them out with 4-1. They won the subsequent game on Captain Bobby Clarke's goal. Fog blocked the players, and Robert cut through the mist in overtime to knock out the Flyers. This match between Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Sabres is known to be one of the best matches in the history of hockey, to be ever played in which willpower, fighting spirit and clean game could be seen throughout the game.
