New York Rangers vs. Toronto Maple Leafs 1932-33
The Stanley Cup is one of the most-recognized symbols in North American sports. It is the championship trophy of the NHL, National Hockey League that is won by one of the teams that have qualified for the championship finals after playing a series of playoff matches. It is the only trophy in professional sports that has the name of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff engraved upon it. The Cup winners keep it until the new champion is crowned. The 1932 to 1933 season of the Stanley Cup final match was played between the most rival teams of the New York Rangers team and the Toronto Maple Leafs team. Both the teams had continued the best winning forms in that season and kept the desire to win the title at the Stanley Cup. However, the New York Rangers team proved to be more dominating and compiled the most famous and memorable victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs team. The Rangers team were stung by their loss in the 1932 Cup so the New York team general manager Lester Patrick went out and got himself a new goaltender, Andy Aitkenhead, but he left the rest of the nucleus intact. Veterans Frank Boucher, Bill and Bun Cook and Murray Murdoch led the Rangers team back the finals. The Maple Leafs team was drained from a grueling series against the Boston team in the playoffs and New York pounced. The Rangers team won the Game 1 by a 5-1 score and the Game 2 by a 3-1 score. In both games, they got brilliant goaltending from Aitkenhead. Toronto avoided a sweep by winning Game 3. That set up a Game 4 showdown. The two clubs were 0-0 after regulation, forcing overtime. Finally the New Rangers team defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs and won the Stanley Cup. Bill Cook gave the Rangers the Cup when he scored in the first overtime.
