The Stanley Cup is one of the most-recognized symbols in North American sports. It is the championship trophy of the NHL, National Hockey League that is won by one of the teams that have qualified for the championship finals after playing a series of playoff matches. It is the only trophy in professional sports that has the name of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff engraved upon it. The Cup winners keep it until the new champion is crowned.

The Stanley Cup championship of the 1991 to1992 season was played between the Pittsburgh Penguins team and the Chicago Blackhawks team. This season, the Penguins team overcame the death of former coach Bob Johnson. The Penguins team rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the first round of the playoffs against Washington. They rebounded after Lemieux sustained a broken bone in his hand in Game 2 against the New York Rangers team. And they went on to sweep four-game series from the Boston Bruins team and Chicago Blackhawks team, becoming the first team to accomplish back-to-back sweeps to climax a Cup victory since the 1982 Islanders.

The Penguins team ended the Blackhawks teams' record eleven-game playoff winning streak in Game 1 of the finals, then capped their triumph by matching that streak in capturing their second consecutive championship. The Penguins team displayed that same scary killing instinct against the Blackhawks team, although it was probably the most competitive four-game sweep you will ever see. The Pittsburgh teams' defense is very average. From purely a defensive standpoint, they have some undesirable and questionable guys. The North Stars team was able to overcome Chicago, Saint Louis and Edmonton, all of which finished 20-or-more points higher in the standings. Mario Lemieux took control scoring 12 points while playing only five games of the six game championship series.

The Pittsburgh team took the series lead by 3-2 and iced the Minnesota team winning 8-0 in game six. Finally the Pittsburgh Penguins team defeated the Chicago Blackhawks team and won the Stanley Cup.
