Portugal 1966 World Cup Team

Controlled by the Portuguese Football Federation, the Portugal national football team has qualified for the FIFA World Cup four different times with two remarkable participations. In 1966, they played for the first time in this competition, reaching the semifinal and finishing third place. That was Eusebio's national team. With the Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari as head coach, Portugal could not equal Eusebio's team, but reached semifinals and finished fourth.  The Portugal national football team has only qualified 4 times for European championships.

His appearances in World Cups began in 1966 when this competition was held in England. The host nation also won the title after defeating West Germany 4-2. FIFA chose England in celebration of the centenary of the codification of football in this country. This World Cup will be always remembered as one of the most important events in football modern history due to the fact that an African player (Eusebio) and an Asian team (North Korea) were the ones making headlines. Eusebio, from Portugal, was the top scorer of the competition with nine goals.

Along with Eusebio, Otto Glória, head coach and his pupils made of Portugal first participation in this tournament a remarkable one. Eusebio's teammates were Américo Lopes, Joaquim Carvalho, José Pereira, Vicente Lucas, Germano, Fernando Peres, Ernesto Figueiredo, João Lourenço, Hilário, Mário Coluna, António Simões, José Augusto, Fernando Cruz, Manuel Duarte, Jaime Graça, João Morais, José Torres, Custódio Pinto, Alexandre Baptista, José Carlos, and Alberto Festa.
