New York Red Bulls

New York Red Bulls, also known as Red Bull New York, is a football club based in New Jersey that plays in the MLS (Major League Soccer). This club has been in the league since its inaugural season in 1996; however, it has gone through several name changes. In 1996, the club was founded as New York/New Jersey MetroStars. From the 1998 season until right before the 2006 season, the club was known simply as the MetroStars. On March 9, 2006, the club was sold to Red Bull (the brand name of an Austrian carbonated soft drink), and the name changed to Red Bull New York. The playing squad is referred to as the New York Red Bulls.

Some fans of the MetroStars has seen the sale of the team as controversial, not dissimilar to the situation in Austria, where Red Bull bought SV Austria Salzburg and renamed it Red Bull Salzburg. This club plays its home games at Giants Stadium, in East Rutherford, New Jersey in the Meadowlands Sports Complex. This stadium has a capacity of 80,242 people. In 2008, New York Red Bulls will move to Red Bull Park, a new soccer-specific stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, a suburb directly across the Passaic River from Newark.

The current coach of this club is former U.S. national team manager Bruce Arena. Some of the most notable former players of this club are: Antony de Avila, Roberto Donadoni, Eddie Gaven, Tim Howard, Alexi Lalas, Clint Mathis, Lothar Matthäus, Mike Petke, Eddie Pope, Tab Ramos, Giovanni Savarese and Adolfo Valencia. Some of the current players of New York Red Bulls are: Tony Meola, Youri Djorkaeff, Dema Kovalenko, Chris Henderson, Amado Guevara, Peter Canero, Markus Schopp and Josmer Altidore.
