Defence Force FC
Defence Force FC is a football club based in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago. It plays in the Professional Football League (the first division of the Trinidad and Tobago football hierarchy). This league was made entirely professional in 1999, after having been made semi-professional in 1996. This club plays its home games at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad. This stadium is named for Hasely Crawford, the first person from Trinidad and Tobago to win an Olympic gold medal. It has a capacity of 27,000 people and was built in 1980 as the National Stadium but was renamed in 2001.
Defence Force is the most successful soccer club of the nation; it has won 18 national championships (one since the Trinidad league became professional in 1999, two in the Semi-Pro league between 1996 and 1998, and fifteen in twenty-two seasons from the establishment of the National League in 1974 to 1995). Defence Force FC is the only club from Trinidad and Tobago to have ever won the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup. The club won this tournament in 1985. This club is made up of members of the Trinidad and Tobago protective forces, hence the name. Usually included are soldiers and officers from the T&T Army and sailors and officers from the T&T Coast Guard. Some of the most notable former players of this club are: Jason Scotland, Carlos Edwards and Dennis Lawrence.
