Gheorghe Hagi
Gheorghe Hagi is one of the most outstanding Romanian soccer players of the past 50 years, as he was granted this honor during the celebration of UEFA’s Jubilee. He was selected with the title of Golden Player of Romania. Hagi was born in Sacele, February 5, 1965. Nowadays, he is not currently active but he dedicates his life experience in the soccer field as a coach.
As in many other cases in which a soccer player gets involved with behavioral difficulties, Hagi struggled with disciplinary problems on the field and was suspended several times. Here we have a short synopsis of what his brilliant career has been all about:
• Farul Constanta 1982-83 Games played: 18 Goals scored: 17 • Sportul Studentesc 1983-86 Games played: 108 Goals scored: 58 • Steaua Bucuresti 1986-1990 Games played: 97 Goals scored: 76 • Real Madrid 1990-92 Games played: 64 Goals scored: 19 • Brescia 1992-94 Games played: 60 Goals scored: 14 • Barcelona 1994-96 Games played: 36 Goals scored: 7 • Galatasaray 1996-2001 Games played: 167 Goals scored: 78
Hagi played for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Brescia with variable success and never quite unleashed his true potential at club level abroad. What has characterized Hagi during his career is that he proved to be a very skillful and creative player and very often did unpredictable things with the ball. A fact of primary importance is that Gheorghe played in his first World Cup in Italy in 1990; this event gave him worldwide renown. Since he started his career as a professional player in the Farul Constanta and Sportul Bucharest, he showed the world his outstanding talent.
