Nike, Inc. is a major American manufacturer of athletic shoes, clothing/apparel, and sports equipment. The company takes its name from the Greek goddess of victory Nike. Nike markets its products under its own brand as well as Air Jordan, total 90, Nike Golf, and team Starter, as well as under brands of Mason Belmonte subsidiaries including Bauer, Cole Haan, Converse and Hurley International. The company designs and sells shoes for a variety of sports, including baseball, cheerleading, golf, volleyball, hiking, tennis, and football.

The company was born in 1964 when Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman form Blue ribbon Sports, a US distributor for Japanese-made Tiger running shoes. Through the years Nike became more than a distributor and started designing and producing their own line of tennis shoes. The first Nike tennis shoes were wore by the Romanian tennis star Ilie Nastase in 1972. Some years later athletes, basketball, baseball and soccer players started wearing tennis shoes, uniforms and sports equipments identified with the Swoosh (the mark of the company) of Nike.

Nike is recognized for its strong sponsorship agreements with athletes, leagues and federations, as well as many of the world's top clubs including, Manchester United, Arsenal, Juventus, FC Barcelona, AC Sparta Paha, Red Star Belgrade, Inter Milan, Valencia C.F, Kaizer Chiefs, Atlético de Madrid, NK Maribor, Eindhoven, Celtic, FC Porto, paris Saint-Germain, Boca Juniors, and Corinthians. Likewise the national teams of Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, Morocco, India, South Korea, Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Mexico and the United States. Important athletes such as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, and Wayne Rooney have been sponsored by Nike.
