Grasshopper-Club Zurich
The largest Swiss sports club in Switzerland is the Neue Grasshopper Fussball AG. It was founded in 1886 by Tom E. Griffith, an English student. With a 20 franc donation, the team was able to import an English football blue and white caps and jerseys.
The origins of the Grasshopper’s name in unknown, although the most common explanation is rooted in the way its early player’s energetic post-goal celebrations. In 1896 the club won the first Swiss Championship, starting with a history of 27 league championships, 18 Swiss Cup wins, and one UEFA Intertoto Cup. In addition, it has a number of high profile competitions in Europe Cup and UEFA Champions League matches.
The Hardturm is the football stadium of Grasshopper- Club Zurich, located in Zurich and with a capacity for 17, 600 fans. It was opened in 1929 and was a host stadium for the Football World Cup 1954, when the Federation International of Football Associations (FIFA) was celebrating its 50th anniversary, and decided to play the football’s premier competition in the home of the governing body.
The trainer Petar Aleksandrov and the players Fabio Coltorti, Juca Denicola, Kim Jaggy, Matthias langkamp, Roland Schwegler, Scott Sutter, Kay Voser, Welignton de Oliveira, Raúl Cabanas, Antonio Dos Santos, Diego León, Dusan Pavlovic, Roberto Pinto, Richmond Rak, Michel Renggli, Vero Salatic, Gerardo Seoane, David Blummer, Eduardo, Biscotte Mbala mbuta, Sreto Ristic and Demba Touré are the squad of Grasshopper-Club Zurich for the 2006 season.
