Deportivo Saprissa is a Costa Rican football club that currently plays in the Primera División (First Division of Costa Rican football). This club holds the record for most international titles by a Costa Rican soccer team and is tied with bitter rivals Liga Deportiva Alajuelense (LDA) in national championships with a total of 24. In 2003, Mexican businessman and film producer Jorge Vergara acquired the club; since then, Deportivo Saprissa has a policy of only fielding Costa Rican players. Hernán Medford is the coach of this club.

In December 2005, Deportivo Saprissa played in the FIFA Club World Cup (formerly the FIFA Club World Championship), representing the CONCACAF region. Deportivo Saprissa finished in third place. La Ultra Morada is the official fan club of Deportivo Saprissa. This club plays its home games at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa, the only stadium in Latin America to display syntethic turf. This stadium is also the home field of Costa Rica’s national team and is the biggest soccer stadium in Costa Rica; it has a capacity of 23,112 people and is named after Ricardo Saprissa Aymá, father and co-founder of the club. Deportivo Saprissa is the greatest soccer team of Costa Rica and the most popular.

Some of the most notable former players of this club are: Mario “Catato” Cordero, Edgar Marín, Wálter Elizondo, Odir Jacques, Evaristo Coronado, Hernán Medford, Alexandre Guimaraes, Juan Arnoldo Cayasso, Erick Lonnis, Gerald Drummond, Javier Wanchope, Adonis Hilario, Adrián Mahía, Alejandro Larrea, Gilberto Martínez, Alvaro Saborío, Rónald Gómez, Ronald González, Juan Bautista Esquivel and Cristian Bolaños. Some of the current players of Deportivo Saprissa are: José Francisco Porras, Jervis Drummond, Gabriel Badilla, Walter Centeno, Alonso Solís, Allan Alemán, Pablo Brenes, Alejandro Alpizar, Try Benneth and José Luis López.
