Olympique Lyonnais
Olympique Lyonnais, OL or Lyon is a French football club from Lyon. This club plays in Ligue 1 (the top division of French football). Lyon is the current champion of French football. In fact, the club has won Le Championnat title for five straight years. According to many supporters and sport historians, Olympique Lyonnais was formed as Lyon Olympique Universitaire in 1899 but was nationally established as a club on August 3, 1950.
This club plays its home matches at the Stade de Gerland. Olympique Lyonnais is a member of the G14 group of leading European football clubs. Lyon has a highly-active and loyal fan-base in Lyon and across France. Olympique Lyonnais has earned a strong reputation across Europe due to its dominance in the Ligue 1 and its appearances in the UEFA Champions League. The main rivalry of Lyon is with AS Saint-Étienne but that team has failed to match the dominance of Olympique Lyonnais. The secondary rivals of Lyon are AS Monaco FC, Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain, although in recent years, Lille OSC and RC Lens have posed as threats.
The most notable former players of Lyon include Raymond Domenech, Ludovic Giuly, Steve Marlet, Bruno N’Gotty, Sonny Anderson, Giovane Elber, Michael Essien and Mahamadou Diarra. Some of the current players of Olympique Lyonnais are: Grégory Coupet, Juninho, John Carew, Florent Malouda, Sidney Govou, Alou Diarra, Fred, Éric Abidal, Tiago, Sylvain Wiltord and Sebastien Squillaci.
