Denis Pankratov
The Olympic Games, or Olympics, are an international multi-sport event taking place every four years which comprises of summer and winter games. Though the first ancient games were held in 776 B.C, the modern games started from 1896.The unity of the 5 continents is shown on the Olympic flag by five colorful intertwined rings of red, blue, green, yellow, and black, created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin to represent at least one color of the participating country’s national flag. Denis Pankratov is a swimming player born on July 4th, 1974 in Volgograd, Soviet Union. He is a retired Russian butterfly swimmer of the 1990s, who was best known for winning the butterfly double at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Also he was winner of silver medal in 4 by 100 m Medley Relay at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He was trained at the Volgograd club with fellow individual gold medallist at Swimming World Swimmer of the Year Evgeni Sadovyi. At the age of 16, in 1990 and again in 1991, he won the Junior European Championships in the butterfly. In the 1995 European Championships in Vienna, he won all three gold medals and breaking Pablo Morales's nine year old 100 meter butterfly world record with a time of 52.32seconds. He held the 100 meter butterfly world record for over two years, until it was broken by Michael Klim. He attempted to repeat his success at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and finished 7th in the 200 m butterfly. He retired after the games. He was named as the male World Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World magazine in 1995 and 1996. Denis Pankratov with all his dedication and devotion in his play achieved many goals in his overall athletic career. He had the ability of defeating the opponent easily by just giving some extra hard work and efforts. He never lost hope in himself and always fought hard to achieve his goal. He is still remembered as one of the best athletes in the history of Olympics.
