Demetrios Petrokokkinos
The Olympic Games, or Olympics, is an international multi-sport event taking place every four years which comprises of summer and winter games. Though the first ancient games were held in 776 B.C, the modern games started from 1896.The unity of the 5 continents is shown on the Olympic flag by five colorful intertwined rings of red, blue, green, yellow, and black, created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin to represent atleast one color of the participating country’s national flag.
Demetrios Petrokokkinos was born in1878 and was a Greek tennis player. He competed at the 1896 Summer Olympics held in Athens. He was defeated in the first round of the singles tournament by fellow Greek Evangelos Rallis. This put him in a six-way tie for eighth that is the last place among the thirteen man field.
In the doubles tournament, he again faced Rallis in the first round. This time, Petrokokkinos along with his partner Dionysios Kasdaglis of Egypt defeated Rallis and his partner Konstantinos Paspatis. Petrokokkinos and Kasdaglis faced Teddy Flack of Australia and George S. Robertson of Great Britain and Ireland in the semifinals, again winning the match to advance to the final. There, they met Irishman John Pius Boland and German Friedrich Traun, to whom they lost to place second.
Demetrios Petrokokkinos with all his dedication and devotion in his play achieved many goals in his overall athletic career. He had the ability of defeating the opponent easily by just giving some extra hard work and efforts. He never lost hope in himself and always fought hard to achieve his goal. He is still remembered as one of the best athletes in the history of Olympics.
