Engler was a First-Team Rolex All-American as a high school senior. He won the American Junior Golf Association Championship title in 1996. He won the ACC, Atlantic Coast Conference tournament during his senior season and held 10 Clemson school records when he left school, including those for career stroke average of 71.78 and season stroke average of 70.87. He was named to the US Palmer Cup team in 1999 and 2000.
 
Engler helped Tigers to runner-up finish at the 2001 NCAA, National Collegiate Athletic Association Championship. He spent some instances on Nationwide Tour, Canadian Tour, Hooters Tour and Tar Heel Tour in summer of 2005. He was a three time All-America selection at Clemson and first team selection in the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Engler was a rookie on PGA Tour after finishing T13 at 2005 Qualifying Tournament.
