NHL, the National Hockey League is a premier professional North American Sports League played in indoor stadiums. The league was established in 1917 in Montreal, Quebec and it is composed of 30 teams out of which 24 teams based in U.S. and 6 in Canada. They have a regular season and playoffs leading to the Stanley Cup, which is the NHL Championship final.

Wellwood was born on 16 May, 1983 from Windsor, Ontario. His height is 5 feet 10 inch and weight is 180 pounds. He is a professional NHL hockey player. His position in the team is at the centre and shoots right. He was acquired and drafted 134th overall in the 2001 Entry Draft. In the 2002-2003 season, he has represented Canada at the World Junior Championships and won the Silver medal. He has played six tournament games collecting five points, one goal and four assists. He has also played 57 games for Windsor of the OHL, Ontario Hockey League collecting 100 points, 41 goals and 59 assists. He had ranked fourth in the OHL in goals and fifth in points. He has led the team in goals, assists and points.

He was named the OHL Player of the Week for the period ending October 14 scoring four goals, four assists in two games. He has played in seven OHL playoff games collecting 14 points, five goals and nine assists. He has led the team during the playoffs in goals, assists and points. In the 2001-2002, he has split the season between Belleville and Windsor of the Ontario Hockey League. He has played 28 games for Belleville collecting 40 points, 16 goals and 24 assists with four penalty minutes. He has played 26 games for Windsor collecting 35 points, 14 goals and 21 assists.
