NHL, the National Hockey League is a premier professional North American Sports League played in indoor stadiums. It’s divided into two conferences, each comprising of three divisions of ice hockey teams. The league was established in 1917 in Montreal, Quebec and it is composed of 30 teams out of which 24 teams based in U.S. and 6 in Canada. Mattias Weinhandl was born on June 1, 1980 in Ljungby, Sweden. He is the third round, 78th overall selection of the New York Islanders in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He came to North America in 2002-03 after three successful seasons in the Swedish Elite League with Modo. He has played three seasons for MoDo and has recorded 139 points in 130 games including 18 goals and 34 points in 50 games in the 2001-2002 season.
 
In the 2002-2003 season, he has split time with the Islanders and Bridgeport in his first professional season in North America. He has played in 47 games for the Islanders notching six goals and tallying 23 points overall. He has played in 23 games with Bridgeport tallying nine goals and 21 points. He has scored his first point in his NHL debut versus Calgary. He has a career-high of three helpers, all in the third period, at New York Rangers. He had notched his first NHL goal versus Ottawa. He has tallied a goal and an assist in playing in the NHL’s Young Stars Game over All-Star Weekend. He has potted a career-high two goals and added one assist at Ottawa.
 
He has appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in his career and went scoreless in five playoff contests.  In the 2004-2005 season he has played 50 games with MoDo of the Swedish Elite League. He had potted 26 goals and had finished with 46 points overall to lead the team in both categories. In the 2005-2006 season, he has skated in 68 games with New York Islanders and Minnesota and recorded 11 points. He has tallied first point in a Wild sweater in 3-2 loss versus Detroit.
