NHL, the National Hockey League is a premier professional North American Sports League played in indoor stadiums. In 2001-02 he was 5th on team in penalty minutes with 72 and 1st on team in faceoff percentage 54. He missed April 11 at Saint Louis with the flu. He posted 100th career penalty minute on November 30 at Anaheim. He tallied first assist of the season and posted season-high 14 minutes 15 seconds of ice time on November 11 at Chicago. He posted first career game winning goal setting a new career high in goals and his first career multi-game goal or point streak on November 6 at Saint Louis.
 
Smith, Mark scored Sharks 1st goal and named game's no. 3 star on Febuary 20 versus Columbus. He tallied 1st career fighting major on Febuary 6 at Calgary and recalled from Kentucky on February 5. He posted 8 points and 23 PIM in 6 games with Kentucky on assignment and reassigned to Kentucky on Febuary 2 and recalled from Kentucky on January 17. He reassigned to Kentucky on January 2 and posted 1st career NHL assist with primary helper on Matteau's on December 14 versus Columbus.
