He recorded a career high plus-20 rating and tied career high for points and assists in one game with two assists on November 29 at Tampa Bay. He was tied for first in the NHL with a plus-13 rating. He appeared in 21 postseason matches, collecting three assists and 24 penalty minutes. In 1997-98, he spent the majority of the season with Buffalo, skating in 56 games, notching 14 points. He played in his 100th career NHL game on April 19 versus Ottawa and appeared in 13 games with Rochester of the AHL American Hockey League, recording eight points. In 1996-97, he scored his first career NHL goal on March 22 at Florida. He was named to the OHL All-Star Second Team, playing for Niagara Falls.
