Toronto Blue Jays

Baseball is an outdoor sport in which a pitcher pitches a hard, fist sized ball to the hitting area of a batter. The batter hits the hard ball with a tapered, smooth, cylindrical bat made up of wood or metal. The batsman scores by running counter-clockwise within the four markers called the bases arranged at the corners of a diamond. Baseball is sometimes called hardball to differentiate it from similar games such as softball.

Created in the 1976 season as American League expansion draft, the Blue Jays won their inaugural game among the snow flurries on April 7, 1977. Doug Ault hit two home runs in that game. The Jays finished last in each of their first five seasons while building a strong franchise with young talent. Future stars like George Bell and Willie Upshaw were acquired through the major league draft. Tom Henke was acquired in the free-agent compensation pool while Jesse Barfield, Dave Stieb, Tony Fernandez ,and Jimmy Key came up quickly through the farm system.

During the 1976 to 1981 season, American League voted to expand the Toronto, awarding franchise to group consisting of Imperial Trust, Ltd. Blue Jays defeated New York Mets by 3-1 mark at Dunedin, Florida in first spring training game. Doug Ault became an instant hero hitting two home runs in the Blue Jays 9-5 win over the Chicago White Sox. Blue Jays completed their home schedule and announced an expansion attendance record with a total of 4,695,288 fans.

In the 1992 to 1996 seasons, Jays were a well-balanced team supplemented by the addition of Dave Winfield, Jack Morris, Alfredo Griffin and David Cone. After clinching their second consecutive A.L. East title, the Jays cruised past the Oakland in six games to reach the World Series for the first time. The Blue Jays’ 20th season was highlighted by Pitcher Pat Hentgen, who became the first member of the club to win the Cy Young award after posting a 20-10 record and leading the A.L. with 10 complete games and 265.2 innings pitched.
