Igor Astapkovich
The Olympic Games, or Olympics, is an international multi-sport event taking place every four years which comprises of summer and winter games. Though the first ancient games were held in 776 B.C, the modern games started from 1896 and were held every four years except in 1916, 1940 and 1944 due to the World Wars. The unity of the 5 continents is shown on the Olympic flag by five colorful intertwined rings of red, blue, green, yellow, and black, created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin to represent atleast one color of the participating country’s national flag. Igor Astapkovich was born on January 4, 1963 in Minsk. He is a hammer thrower who won two Olympic medals, first representing USSR, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and later his home country of Belarus. He won silver medals at three consecutive World Championships, and became the 1990 European champion. His personal best throw of 84.62 meters, achieved in 1992, puts him 6th on the all-time performer's list. He is a player known for his mental toughness owing to which many of his famous matches went the distance. His superior approach and dedication to the game made him stand out from the crowd. More than just statistics, Astapkovich had the ability to control the game, to take over. He had the speed to float away from defenders and also to recover effortlessly.
